Dear Shrek Jr. Middle School Auditioners and Families,
We’re excited to share that the Shrek Jr. cast list is now officially in the casting stage. Over the past several weeks—solo auditions and multiple rounds of callbacks—you showed professionalism, enthusiasm, and genuine support for one another. That positivity has been a bright spot for all of us.
We also know that waiting can come with a mix of excitement and nerves. Casting a musical is a detailed and layered process. With so many talented students and an extensive collection of roles to fill, our six casting directors (three internal and three external) are piecing together a puzzle with many moving parts—reviewing hundreds of pages of notes, conflict calendars, vocal ranges, chemistry pairings, and the unique ways each performer approached the material. It takes time to bring all of these variables together in a way that supports the story, works for the production as a whole, and sets the entire cast up for success.
It’s also important to remember that casting is not a measure of character or effort. Every student had the opportunity to show us their skills—vocally, dramatically, and in their ability to take direction—and our job is to place students where they will be most successful right now. Sometimes that looks different from what a performer hoped for, but these decisions are made with great care, objectivity, and a commitment to each student’s growth.
The panel will reconvene after Thanksgiving, and the cast list will be released by midweek, as shared with students. It will be posted here on the Shrek Jr. blog, and we’ll share an update the moment it’s live.
